Dear Senators:
You are probably aware of the controversy created when the House Budget Bill eliminated the Newberry Corrections Facility (including Camp Manistique). The Senate passed a bookmark amendment to include the NCF but fund it at $ 100. The Eastern UP has mounted a strong grassroots effort to make legislators aware of the dire consequences of closing this facility for our communities.
House leaders have since indicated support for keeping NCF open. We need your support too!
We want the Newberry Correctional Facility fully funded in the State budget and we do not want to fight this battle again next year.
Please, take the partisan politics out of Lansing and govern based on sound policy. The facts, the independent auditors, and the MDOC all favor keeping the facility open, and they recommend other options for reducing MDOC’s budget. These recommendations are based on sound economics and sound corrections management principles.
The Newberry Corrections Facility is well-run, and it houses 1300 inmates. Please get the facts. It is not the state’s highest cost medium-security facility, and its cost per inmate reflects the fact that it runs a nationally-recognized inmate education program. Also, know that the community actively supports the NCF with a great prison ministry program. Inmates leave Newberry with a GED and with exposure to religion. Chances of recidivism are lower and long-term costs economic and social are lower to the State.
The employees of the NCF and their families are critical to the operation of our communities. They are volunteer EMTs and firemen, they are troop leaders and coaches, they are church leaders and volunteer tutors at our schools. Their spouses are technicians and nurses in our hospital, they are teachers in our schools, they work in our businesses, and they bring all sorts of skills and energy to our communities. Their children make up 13% of our school enrollment and they do all kinds of community service too. We want them all here; now and in the future!

Dear Representatives,
We are emailing you at this time to ask you for your support for the Newberry Correctional Facility. Please take this time, away from the busy political season, to analyze the data and statistics that have proven that the Newberry Correctional Facility is vital part of Michigan's future - reducing recidivism, creating a safer Michigan, and saving our state and it's tax payers money in the future! If you are unaware of the incredible history of the NCF please visit: www.savenewberry.com to learn more!
Our facility has a dynamic record and continues to be the leader in graduating prisoners with GED's - the best in the Nation! Please take your time in deciding on whether partisan politics or common sense should prevail in deciding the fate of our community and the State of Michigan.
We would also like to thank the many who have supported our endeavors:
We thank all those who traveled here in person to tour our prison and visit our community members. We thank Governor Jennifer Granholm for her unwavering support! We thank Sen Jason Allen for his testimony and support of the NCF at the Hearing in Lansing. We thank the the Sub Committee Members: Senators A. Cropsey (C), C. Brown (VC), V. Garcia, M. Switalski (MVC), and M. Prusi for the opportunity to be heard in Lansing. We thank Sen Mike Prusi, Rep Steven Adamini, Rep Gary McDowell, and Rep Tom Casperson for their hard work on the behalf of the NCF and the entire Newberry Community.
As you may have already learned, our citizens will stand strong for what we believe in. We have gathered support from across the entire State of Michigan. There has been an outcry from every community asking: Why is this happening to Newberry? When will the partisan politics end? When will those we vote in truly represent the people?
We will continue to work hard to gain your support. Please stand strong in what you believe in, the many citizens across the state and the entire Upper Peninsula will never forget your help!
From the heart of the Upper Peninsula, we ask you to consider the facts and make a stand for what you believe in! When it comes time to make a decision, which will in turn effect the entire State of Michigan and it's future - make the right choice! And for those who have taken a stand on our behalf - we express our gratitude to you.
